DIY Kitchen: What You Need To Know

As any homeowner will be well aware, the cost of overhauling your entire kitchen can be fairly prohibitive – especially when you factor in the cost of professional fitting experts.

There can, however, be a way for you to cut the cost – and all you need is a little DIY savvy to get started.

As the name suggests, a DIY kitchen is one where you take care of fitting all of the elements yourself, without the assistance of a professional. Perhaps you have seen some stunning kitchen units for sale at a bargain price, or just have confidence in your own skills – fitting your own kitchen does not have to be as hard as it seems. Read on for our top tips, and get ready to start planning.

Plan Ahead

This is one of the most important aspects of the project. A new kitchen is a chance for a fresh start, so it is worth really taking some time to plan out the new layout. If you have existing connections, for example, plumbing, gas or electricity, you may be limited to what you can move about, but you can use these as a starting point, and plan the rest of the room around these. Are you a keen cook or master baker? Then plan for plenty of counter space, as well as storage for ingredients and tools. Making the kitchen the heart of the home? Add an island or central dining space which allows everyone to sit together. It is important to consider your use of the kitchen – this will be the core underpinning of any new design.

As we mentioned, you will also need to consider the position of any existing utilities and connections, and make sure that these work for you. Plan to place appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines as close as possible to the sink to save time and energy – this will also make appliances far easier to install!

Preparation, Preparation, Preparation

Once the old kitchen is ripped out, you will have a blank canvas to work with – and making the most of this can save you valuable time in the long run. Use this opportunity to carry out any repairs or decoration, making sure that everything is ready for your new units to move in.

You will also need to measure the space, and calculate the number and size of the units – it is a good idea to do this before you see an unmissable deal on kitchen units for sale and get your heart broken! Also remember to measure worktops, and leave space for appliances and the sink. Make sure you have everything cut and ready to go before you get started,

Be Methodical

Once it comes to actually installing the kitchen, the best option is to work methodically. As a general rule, most experts recommend that you begin by adding units to the relevant spaces – this gives you a skeleton to work around – before filling in the gaps with appliances, and finishing with worktops, doors and general decoration.
